UGC NET or NTA-UGC-NET, is the examination for determining the eligibility for the post of assistant professor and/or Junior Research Fellowship award in Indian universities and colleges. The examination is conducted by National Testing Agency on behalf of University Grants Commission. Every year, the exam is conducted twice in June and December cycles.

What is UGC NET Exam?

UGC NET stands for University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test. It is a national level exam to determine eligibility for lectureship and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in universities or colleges across India.

2. Who conducts the UGC NET Exam?

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has been entrusted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) with the task of conducting UGC-NET exam.

3. What is the mode of Exam?

The UGC-NET is being conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode w.e.f. December 2018 onwards.

4. How many times the exam is conducted in a year?

UGC-NET is conducted twice every year (June & December).

5. For how many subjects the exam is conducted?

UGC NET exam is conducted for 83 subjects.

6. How is the award of JRF/Assistant Professorship given?

The award of JRF and Eligibility for Assistant Professor both OR Eligibility for Assistant Professor only will depend on the performance of the candidate in the two papers of NET.

However, the candidates qualifying exclusively for Assistant Professor will not be considered for award of JRF.

Candidates appearing in NET should clearly specify in the prescribed Application Form whether they are applying for both JRF & Eligibility for Assistant Professor both OR only for Eligibility for Assistant Professor.

Candidates qualifying for the award of JRF will be eligible to receive fellowship of UGC under various schemes, subject to their finding placement in universities/IITs/Institutions.

The validity period of the offer will be three years w.e.f. the date of issue of JRF Award Letter.

7. What is the pattern of examination?

The Test will consist of two papers. Both the papers will consist of objective type, multiple choice questions.

The questions in Paper I intends toassess the teaching/ research aptitude of the candidate. It will primarily be designed to test reasoning ability, reading comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness of the Candidate.

The medium of Question Paper shall be in English & Hindi only except language papers.

Option of medium of Question Paper should be carefully chosen by the Candidate, while filling the Application Form online. The option once exercised cannot be changed.

8. What is the marking scheme for examination?

Each question carries 02 (two) marks.

For each correct response, candidate will get 02 (two) marks.

There is no negative marking for incorrect response.

9. Are professional qualifications, viz. Chartered Accountancy (CA) / Company Secretary / Indian Cost & Works Accountancy (ICWA) valid qualifications to appear in NET?

Yes, the persons with professional qualifications like CA/CS/ICWA are valid qualifications to appear in NET.

10. What is the Criteria for declaration of result?

As per the UGC policy, 6 % of those candidates who appear in both the papers and obtain minimum qualifying marks in aggregate of both the papers will be declared NET qualified.

For the general category, the minimum qualifying percentage is 40%, and for the reserved category, it is 35%.

11. What is the eligibility criteria for applying for the exam?

General/Unreserved/General-EWS candidates who have secured at least 55% marks (without rounding off) in Master’s Degree or equivalent examination from universities/institutions recognized by UGC. The Other Backward Classes (OBC) belonging to Non-Creamy Layer/Scheduled Caste (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST)/Persons with Disability (PwD)/Third gender category candidates who have secured at least 50% marks (without rounding off) in Master’s degree or equivalent examination are eligible for this Test.

Candidates who are pursuing their Master’s degree or equivalent course or candidates who have appeared for their qualifying Master’s degree (final year) examination and whose result is still awaited will be admitted provisionally and shall be considered eligible for award of JRF/eligibility for Assistant Professor only after they have passed their Master’s Degree or equivalent examination within two years from the date of NET result with required percentage of marks, failing which they shall be treated as disqualified.

12. Is there any age restriction for applying for the JRF candidates and Assistant Professor?

JRF- Not more than 30 years

Assistant Professor – There is no upper age limit in applying for UGC-NET for Assistant Professor.

13. How many times can one attempt the NET exam?

For Assistant Professorship – No Limit

For JRF – No limit till the maximum age of 30.

14. Will distance education be acceptable for UGC NET?

Yes, distance education is accepted for the UGC NET Exam only if you enrolled in a UGC approved university/institute.

15. Are the candidates with Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) eligible to appear in NET?

The candidates having Post Graduate Diploma awarded by an Institution should in their own interest, ascertain the equivalence of their diploma with Master’s degree of recognized Indian universities from the website of Association of Indian Universities (AIU) (www.aiu.ac.in).
